Luis Campos Gives Honest Assessment on Dembele
In the recently-passed summer window, the new PSG Director played a major role over their transfers and was responsible for orchestrating a number of the deals. He took over the responsibilities of ex-PSG sporting director Leonardo, who left the club after the end of last season.
Explaining why the Ligue 1 giants did not pursue a move for Dembele, Campos said: “We didn’t sign Dembele because he’s a winger and we’re playing with another system. I love Dembele, he’s great but we had different plans.”

Before the summer window had even begun, PSG splurged an enormous amount of money to convince Kylian Mbappe to stay with them rather than join Real Madrid. The French side will reportedly pay him £217 million in wages over a three-year contract – making him the highest-paid player in the world. With PSG playing Neymar, Mbappe and Lionel Messi together – they probably didn’t have a space for Dembele in their lineup and shelved plans to sign him.
PSG’s Talks With Dembele Took Place During Leonardo’s Stay
Fabrizio Romano states that the Ligue 1 side were only interested in signing Dembele when Leonardo was part of the club. The former Director was reportedly the one to hold talks with the French winger’s representatives and push the interest to bring him to Paris.
But the Brazilian was forced to leave his post with PSG and the club changed their minds about making a move for the French international, who was once dubbed as ‘better than Neymar’ by former Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu. Dembele eventually changed his mind, signing a two-year contract with Barcelona and has started the season well with them.
