£270 Million: Strongest Chelsea Lineup Following Potential Record Spend

Thiago Silva in the strongest Chelsea lineup

The summer transfer window has slammed shut and The Blues emerge with a new look squad. Todd Boehly and co. made a big statement this off-season by spending big and making the right deals. Nizaar Kinsella has even theorised that the team broke a world record for the biggest spend in a transfer window with over £270 million spent based on various reported fees. With a host of new players comes a lot of optimism for the season to come so let’s take a look at the best Chelsea lineup they could field in this campaign.

Best Chelsea Lineup After Transfer Window Closure

Best Additions

Following the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen the defence needed to be addressed. For that reason, it’s hard to look beyond the signings of Wesley Fofana and Kalidou Koulibaly as the strongest additions this summer. Koulibaly is the perfect replacement for Rudiger given the similarities in their play and Fofana is an excellent young talent who can replace Thiago Silva at the heart of the back line in years to come.

Best Players Who Stayed at Chelsea

While he was never really linked with a move away from the club Reece James staying put is a great sign. The only natural right-wing-back in the squad is an academy graduate who owns the right side of the field every time he steps onto the pitch. Kai Havertz is also looking to kick on after an impressive 2021/22 campaign and should flourish alongside Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Raheem Sterling.

Chelsea also did well to retain Thiago Silva. The senior centre-back was a key part of the defence last season, and he could play an important role in bedding in players such as Fofana.

Best Chelsea Lineup

The trusty 3-4-3 will get the best out of the current squad as has been the case under Thomas Tuchel. The best possible team that could be put out in that formation is:

GK – Edouard Mendy

CB – Wesley Fofana

CB – Thiago Silva

CB – Kalidou Koulibaly

LWB – Marc Cucurella

CM – N’Golo Kante

CM – Mateo Kovacic

RWB – Reece James

LW – Kai Havertz

ST – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

RW – Raheem Sterling

The defence is about as set as it will ever be with the starting three being pretty obvious barring injury. A lack of depth for James ensures that he will command the right wing-back spot for the foreseeable future.

Things get tricky in the midfield as there are some like-for-like switches that could be made which wouldn’t have a huge impact on the team. However, at the moment Jorginho and Zakaria miss out on a spot in the team. The same is true for Mason Mount, who misses out on a spot in the starting eleven with Aubameyang being flanked by the creative and goalscoring outlets of Havertz and Sterling.
