According to Fabrizio Romano, the future of Chelsea youngster Levi Colwill is in doubt as the club looks to sign three top centre-backs this summer, with Kalidou Koulibaly joining the West London club on an initial four-year deal for a fee of £34 million. The club’s continued interest in Nathan Ake would seemingly make it difficult for the young defender to get sufficient minutes this coming campaign. Chelsea and Colwill are expected to decide his future soon as Thomas Tuchel seemingly views the youngster as surplus to requirements with Southampton reportedly interested in signing the promising young defender.

Young Centre-Back Finds Path to First Team Blocked
Despite an impressive loan spell at Huddersfield Town where he played 32 times and scored two goals, this doesn’t seem to have been enough to impress Tuchel who is actively looking at potential new defensive signings. With the club looking externally to improve the defence, Colwill seems to be moving closer to the Stamford Bridge exit door, which will disappoint Chelsea fans who have witnessed Marc Guehi and Fikayo Tomori leave the club in recent years and excel. The potential of this happening again will undoubtedly disappoint the club’s supporters who will be hoping for the next Reece James or Mason Mount to break through.

The Kings Road club were seemingly interested in Matthijs de Ligt before the player agreed to personal terms on a move to Bayern Munich, which has led the Stamford Bridge club to pursue Ake from Manchester City and Presnel Kimpembe from Paris Saint-Germain as replacements for the recently departed Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger.

Ake would bring versatility to the Chelsea squad by being able to play in a back four or five, but he would also undoubtedly stifle the chances of Colwill earning a place in the first-team squad. Kimpembe is great at timing his tackles much like Rudiger was for the west London club. He is also extremely athletic and having worked under Tuchel previously the transition for the player should be seamless.
A Strong Player
Colwill’s loan spell in the Championship highlighted many of his attributes, with the way he dominated many established strikers standing out the most, alongside his reading of the game and his ability to bring the ball out of defence which was a vital weapon in helping the Terriers transition from defence to attack.
Before his arrival at Huddersfield Town, the team leaked 1.5 goals per game and this was reduced to 1.1 during his season on loan from Chelsea showing the influence he had despite only being 19 years old.
