David Ornstein of The Athletic has been speaking on the ongoing Frenkie de Jong transfer saga between Manchester United and Barcelona. In the latest update, Ornstein mentioned that there is an expectation that the deal will be done, but it is a game of poker with Barcelona to secure the services of the special talent.
Ornstein added to this by commenting: “Barça needs to raise funds but don’t want to relinquish their best player or show their hand, they want to rinse #mufc for as much money as possible but United are staying calm”
Manchester United Expected to Sign Frenkie de Jong

Barcelona Need Money
One thing that is apparent to every onlooker is that Barcelona need money, and Ornstein confirmed as much in his comments. Despite their monetary issues, the Catalans side are linked with moves for major players like Robert Lewandowski, who is pushing for a Barcelona transfer himself, Marcos Alonso, Andreas Christensen, and Cesar Azpilicueta to name just a few.
It is clear that the five-time Champions League winners will have to part with the dynamic midfielder in order to make other moves happen, but they are still holding strong and attempting to get as much money as possible.
United Equally in Need but Calm Regardless
The Red Devils need to get the signing of De Jong over the line. The Dutch midfielder is their first major target under Erik ten Hag and has been their main focus of this entire window. Despite this need, the club have remained calm and refused to spend extraordinary money on the 25-year-old as they know the position Barcelona are in.

With United potentially having to match or exceed de Jong’s whopping €205K per week salary they will be looking to shave as much off his eventual transfer fee as possible to put back into his wage packet.
