Burgeoning superstar Gavi and Barcelona are currently in a contract standoff over the current negotiations for a new deal. Fabrizio Romano reported: “Gavi’s agent has the new contract proposal on the table since a long time but he has not accepted yet. We don’t understand… I don’t like the situation”.
Almost an hour later Gavi’s camp responded per Romano: “Gavi’s camp not happy with Barça comments on new contract situation. They have been waiting for official paperworks for almost two weeks”
Gavi and Barcelona in Contract Dispute
Standoff Between Player and Club
Gavi and his camp recently refuted reports from Barcelona president Joan Laporta over the new contract proposal. Laporta said in an interview that Barcelona has had a proposal on the table for a long time. Not long after, Gavi’s camp refuted the reports. Gavi currently has a contract with Barcelona until 2023 with a release clause of €50 million. Part of the new contract will be to remove the current release clause
Xavi Has His Say
Gavi has one year left on his current deal but manager Xavi wants him to stay. Romano reported: “Gavi deal? I’m not worried, these things take time. I am hopeful that in a few days we can announce something”.
Xavi wants to keep the young core of players around. Recently Barcelona signed Ronald Araujo to a long term deal. With Ansu Fati, Pedri, and Araujo all signed up, Gavi is the next player Xavi would like to keep on.
The Importance of Gavi to Barcelona
Barcelona are trying to keep their youth in house to get back to the glory days when La Masia ruled the world, along with keeping other pieces that both the club and manager Xavi feel are important. Players like Frenkie de Jong could be an integral part of the midfield for years to come. Given their financial situation though they might have to sell some players, making the renewal of Gavi all the more important. Losing de Jong could mean that Gavi and Pedri are the key starters going into the new season.
