AC Milan title hopes are on the line Sunday when the Rossoneri host Fiorentina Sunday afternoon. Not only will the squad be decked out in new Puma kits, but they will have the opportunity to maintain their Serie A lead after rivals Inter Milan faltered versus Bologna. Fiorentina, however, are a tough opponent and will surely cause headaches for Milan.
AC Milan Title Hopes on the Line Versus Fiorentina
Team Form
Milan underwent two draws versus Bologna and Torino that put their Scudetto hopes on the line. The team’s defence performed admirably, but Milan struggled to find the back of the net. Shortly after, the team regained their swagger with a 2-0 victory over Genoa.
The victory party didn’t last long, however, as Milan then fell 3-0 to Inter in the Coppa Italia semi-finals. The first leg ended in a 0-0 draw, so Milan had a real chance to qualify for the finals but were blown out of the water. Afterwards, however, Milan won 2-1 against Lazio thanks to goals from Olivier Giroud and Sandro Tonali. They’re entering this match with their heads held high.
Fiorentina have had a mixed bag of results. Earlier this month, they beat both Napoli and Venezia. Afterwards, they also fell in the Coppa Italia semi-finals, this time to Juventus.
Their last two games, however, have been awful. They lost 2-1 to Salernitana and were demolished 4-0 by Udinese.
Fiorentina Can Cause Trouble
Yes, Fiorentina are currently on a poor run of form. With that being said, they’re sitting seventh on the Serie A table. Fiorentina remain in the thick of things in Italy. They have a number of talented players. For starters, former Milan striker Krzysztof Piatek lines upfront along with Arthur Cabral. This striking duo causes headaches to opposing defences. A number of other talented players include Nikola Milenković, Gaetano Castrovilli, Jonathan Ikoné, Lucas Torreira, Sofyan Amrabat, and others.
Fiorentina lay claim to a strong attack with both a solid midfield and defence.
Expected Line Up for AC Milan with Serie A Hopes Right in Front of Them
Stefano Pioli needs to ace his lineup decisions for this match. The opportunity to lift the Scudetto is right in front of him and his squad.
Mike Maignan starts at goal as he continues an excellent season. The defence includes the likes of Davide Calabria, Fikayo Tomori, Pierre Kalulu, and Theo Hernandez. Defence continues to be a strong point for Milan with this group.
Pioli’s double-pivot features Tonali, hot on form, and Franck Kessie.
Giroud and Rafael Leao are constants in Milan’s attack. The other positions, attacking midfielder and right-winger, are always mysteries. Due to form, however, Brahim Diaz and Junior Messias could get the starting spots.
On paper, this looks like Milan’s top starting line-up for this must-win match. The Rossoneri will also be able to feature big names off the bench if needed, such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ante Rebic, and Ismael Bennacer. Pioli tends to make the right calls with his lineups, especially throughout this current season.
