Ronald Araujo Has Signed a Contract Renewal With Barcelona

Premier League Interest

The Uruguayan international was followed by a lot of Premier League teams but decided to stay with Barcelona. The new contract will have a €1 billion release clause included, the club has confirmed.

The signing of his new contract will take place this Friday on the field of Camp Nou. The ceremony will include the official signing of the contract and a speech by club president Joan Laporta and the player himself.

Ronald Araujo’s Career at Barca Until Now

The Uruguayan centre-back was bought from local team Boston River back in 2019. His career in Spain started with Barcelona’s second team. Araujo had 42 appearances in two seasons for Barcelona B between 2018 and 2020. This year, he is playing his third season for the first team, already having 56 appearances and six goals to his name. The current campaign is his best one until now. The 23-year-old defender has played in 31 games, scoring five goals.

Since Xavi arrived, Barcelona are a completely different team, playing beautiful and dynamic football and achieving some great results. The club legend has taken the team to the second position in La Liga. That means Barcelona will most likely secure Champions League qualification for next season. It is clear that Xavi rates Araujo as the defender starts almost every game under the new manager.

It remains to be seen who will be his partner in the heart of the defence for the coming campaign. Samuel Umtiti, Gerard Pique and Eric Garcia are rotated by Xavi and a new defender may also arrive during the summer transfer window. No matter who gets to play at the other centre-back position, it seems clear that Araujo will be one of the fundamental parts of Xavi’s project.
