Bayern Munich Defender Set to Leave for Free This Summer

Niklas Sule

Bayern Munich defender Niklas Sule has turned down a contract extension from the German giants and is set to leave as a free agent in the summer according to Fabrizio Romano.

Sule joined Bayern from Hoffenheim in 2017 and has made 25 appearances this season. The centre-back has won four Bundesliga titles, two DFB Pokals, and a UEFA Champions League winner’s medal during his time in Bavaria.

However, his stay in the Bundesliga appears to be coming to an end. It has been reported that his preferred move would be one to arguably the most competitive elite division in the world: the Premier League.

Where Next for Sule?

The German international has been one of the best centre-backs in Europe over the past few years. It is a huge blow for Bayern Munich who already lost David Alaba to Real Madrid also on a free transfer last summer after a similar contract dispute.

Sule has been linked with a transfer to Chelsea and Newcastle United recently. A move to Stamford Bridge appears more likely with the Blues in need of defensive reinforcements, especially given that Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, and club captain Cesar Azpilicueta are all out of contract in the summer, while Thiago Silva is not getting any younger.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are also looking to improve their defence given that their record for goals conceded is the second worst in the Premier League. The Magpies have already had bids for Sevilla defender Diego Carlos and Lille’s Sven Botman turned down. Bayern could look to offload him in January so he doesn’t leave on a free transfer, however, given Newcastle’s current league position, Sule may feel it better to explore his options in the summer.

Barcelona are also reportedly interested in the centre-back who is set to be one of the most wanted free agents come the summer transfer window.
