Jurgen Ekkelenkamp Reaches Agreement to Join Hertha Berlin

Jurgen Ekkelenkamp

21-year-old Ajax midfielder Jurgen Ekkelenkamp has reached an agreement to join Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin, with just the official announcement to come, according to Fabrizio Romano. The details of the deal are yet to be revealed, but, it is likely to be a small fee, considering Hertha’s stature in European football.

The Bundesliga side will be glad to get the deal over the line, with the transfer window edging closer and closer to slamming shut. Having had the worst start to the Bundesliga season possible, too, sitting bottom after two games, it’s fair to say that the fans needed some good news.

Hertha Berlin Must Improve, and Quick

At any top level in football, the tables can turn at any moment. A team can go from surviving relegation one year, to winning the league title in true underdog fashion the next. Leicester City is a prime example of that. Likewise, however, a team can go from battling for Europa League places to relegation in the space of a year, just look at Sheffield United. So, the last thing that Hertha Berlin will want is to go on a never-ending winless run.

Next up, they face Bayern Munich in a game that is unlikely to turn their fortunes around. With Jurgen Ekkelenkamp potentially unveiled as a Hertha player by then, however, the team from the capital could have something to cheer about. It is no easy task to emerge from Ajax’s academy but, when a player does, they often go onto have great success. Ekkelenkamp, perhaps taking the unconventional route, will be desperate to reach the level of former academy graduates such as Frenkie de Jong.

If the Bundesliga newcomer does hit the heights of the aforementioned Barcelona man, Hertha Berlin will have themselves one of the deals of the summer.
