Espanyol have reached an agreement with Sevilla over the transfer of Sergi Gomez, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Catalan side is looking to strengthen their defence following their promotion from Segunda Division.
Sergi Gomez to Leave Sevilla for Espanyol
Sergi Gomez Ends a Disappointing Spell in Seville
Espanyol is set to sign Sergi Gomez from Sevilla. The 29-year-old will join the Catalan side on a three-year contract with an option to extend for another year. Gomez had been on the periphery of Sevilla’s starting XI during the last season.
Gomez joined Sevilla in 2018 following an impressive four-year spell with Celta Vigo. The defender had a good debut season under Pablo Machin for the Andalusian club but following the appointment of Julen Lopetegui in 2019, the Barcelona graduate lost his place in the starting lineup.
In three seasons at Sevilla, Gomez has made 85 appearances for the club. He was also part Sevilla squad that won the Europa League in 2020.
A Busy Transfer Window for Sevilla
It has been a very busy transfer window for Sevilla so far. They signed Marko Dmitrovic earlier in the transfer window following Tomas Vaclik’s departure on a free after opting to run down his contract. Franco Vazquez, Sergio Escudero, Juan Soriano and Aleix Vidal also left the club at the end of their deals while Guilherme Arana joined Atletico Mineiro. Sergi Gomez will be the third player to leave the club since the start of July.
The biggest transfer story in Sevilla so far has been the arrival of Erik Lamela. The La Liga side swapped rising star Bryan Gill, 20, for the 29-year-old midfielder from Tottenham Hotspur. The deal saw Sevilla reportedly receive €25 million. Sevilla are likely to continue their busy transfer window with an eye on filling the spot left by Sergi Gomez.
