James Rodriguez’s Everton departure is still possible this summer, according to the Athletic, after new manager Rafa Benitez seemed to hint towards the situation in a recent press conference. The Spaniard commentated on potential sales this summer, saying: “Everybody knows that this club has spent a lot of money in the last few years so that means that Financial Fair Play is a factor.
“If you have players with big salaries that normally aren’t playing then you want to find a solution and this solution will mean you have money to spend on new players. So we will try to maximise what we have and manage the best way possible to be sure we can bring players that will make us strong.”
The Colombian playmaker may be part of those plans in order to raise funds this summer. And, whilst an offer is yet to come in, Rodriguez, himself, may desire Champions League football once more.
James Rodriguez’s Everton Departure Still Possible
Everton Yet to Do Business
Rafa Benitez aside, not a single person has walked through the Goodison gates this summer. Whether the Toffees need to sell players before buying remains to be seen, but panic may start to set in if they don’t act soon. Clubs around them such as Leicester City have enjoyed a transfer window to remember, taking their squad to a new level. Meanwhile, Everton, who want to compete for the European places, seem content with what they’ve got.
Of course, there’s still time left in the window to makes several moves this summer, but, as of right now, James Rodriguez’s potential Everton departure is the most talked about transfer. That’s the last thing Rafa Benitez will want, too, ahead of the new season with the pressure already mounting because of his Liverpool past.
