After losing Hakan Calhangolu to Inter Milan, AC Milan are on the hunt for a new attacking midfielder. Milan manager Stefano Pioli uses a 4-2-3-1 formation, making the central attacking midfielder a crucial position to provide playmaking to the lone striker. According to Marca, potential AC Milan transfers could include James Rodriguez and Isco.
AC Milan Transfers: Club Monitoring Attacking Midfield Options Ahead of New Season
James Rodriguez
Rodriguez burst onto the scene in 2014 after a fantastic World Cup with Colombia. He followed that with a transfer to Real Madrid, where he enjoyed a few fruitful seasons. After Madrid, Rodriguez spent time with Bayern Munich and is now playing in the Premier League with Everton.
Although disappearing from the scene to an extent, Rodriguez remains a strong option. He has just turned 30, meaning he still has a few seasons left in the tank. With Milan’s return to Champions League, it will be important to have another experienced veteran on the squad.
At Everton last season, Rodriguez scored six goals and provided five assists in 23 Premier League appearances. In two FA Cup appearances, Rodriguez supplied three assists. The talent is clearly still there, and Milan would be wise to see what he can do with striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Isco
Isco, like Rodriguez, has dropped off over the last couple of seasons. The Spaniard, however, has not left Real Madrid since his original arrival. Isco stayed and fought for a spot, but it seems like his career in Madrid is now over.
In 25 La Liga appearances last season, Isco provided two assists. He did not score a single goal. As seen in the past, however, Isco has a boatload of talent and right now he’s 29-years-old.
From a neutral perspective, it seems as if Isco is the kind of player waiting for a change of scenery to break out once again. With the 2022 World Cup on the horizon as well, Isco would be wise to depart Real Madrid for consistent playing time elsewhere. He’ll immediately become a starter with the Rossoneri.
