A Difficult Time at the Emirates for Runar Alex Runarsson

It has not been smooth sailing for Alex Runarsson following his move last September. The shot-stopper arrived at the Emirates as the replacement for Emiliano Martinez, who moved on to Aston Villa.

Runarsson was a surprise signing for the Gunners. The keeper did not have the best of CVs and was not even the first-choice at Dijon when he moved to the Emirates.

The move proved too big for the Iceland international. Runarsson struggled at Arsenal following his arrival. He has made six appearances for them but have looked shaky in all of them. The shot-stopper’s poor outing against Manchester City in the EFL Cup saw him delete his social media accounts after abuse was aimed at him.

The 26-year-old’s poor performances eventually convinced Arsenal to sign Mat Ryan on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion as the back-up to Bernd Leno.

A Complete Overhaul for the Gunners

Arsenal are set to have one of the biggest transfer windows in their history. The Gunners are reportedly set to have a major squad overhaul, with several of the existing players moving out of the club while also bringing in several new faces.

Runarsson is unlikely to be the last one to move out of Emirates this season. Arsenal’s 22-year-old French midfielder Matteo Guendouzi is reportedly close to signing for Marseille. Former captain Granit Xhaka is on his way to join Jose Mourinho at AS Roma while Hector Bellerin is reportedly on his way out. Young striker Eddie Nketiah is also reportedly on the transfer market after he rejected a contract extension from the Gunners.

Meanwhile, Brighton’s Ben White, Anderlecht’s Albert Sambi Lokonga, Benfica’s Nuno Tavares and Sheffield United’s Aaron Ramsdale are all reportedly close to moving to the Emirates this season.
