Barcelona Deal Trumped by PSG
It had appeared for some time that Wijnaldum would leave Liverpool and join La Liga giants Barcelona but PSG came in with a bigger offer and Barcelona wore not happy to equal or improve upon that so the Dutchman instead agreed terms with PSG and Mauricio Pochettino.
Georginio Wijnaldum Time at Liverpool Reaches End
Wijnaldum’s Liverpool contract was coming to an end this summer and, with fellow Dutchman Ronald Koeman confirmed as remaining at Barcelona, it seemed that was where the midfielder’s future lied with Barcelona in the process of organising a medical for the player when PSG blindsided the Catalan club and swooped to change the course of the transfer.
Pochettino Led Charm Offensive
Romano reported that to seal the deal, Pochettino led a charm offence via personal phone calls to the player:
Wijnaldum was a vital part of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool squad who, despite losing their Premier League crown to Manchester City, did seal a top four finish and Champions League qualification for the 2021/22 season. He started all five of the last five games for Liverpool as they took maximum points leading to a fitting finish to his career at Anfield.
Wijnaldum now joins PSG and will be joining up with his new team mates following his participation for the Netherlands in this summers delayed Euro 2020 tournament when they take on Austria, Ukraine and North Macedonia in the group stages and looking to reach the latter stages.
The Dutchman will hope to have a significant impact in France.
