After spells on loan, both Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira are set to depart this summer. The two midfielders arrived with plenty of promise before their dream move soon turned into a nightmare. That nightmare looks set to end, however, according to Fabrizio Romano. That’s not the only piece of Arsenal transfer news, either, with the summer set to be a busy one.
Romano also reported that Granit Xhaka is getting ever-closer to making the switch to AS Roma this summer to join Jose Mourinho. That makes three midfielders likely to depart this summer, alongside loanee Dani Ceballos, leaving Mikel Arteta completely short of options.
Surely, should all three leave, it is for a reason; a fund to make improvements. When clearing deadwood, it usually signals the signing of younger, better and more eager talent. In Arsenal’s case, they must get this summer right. If they don’t, they face the possibility of a permanent place in the depths of mid-table.
Arsenal Transfer News: Martin Odegaard the Priority
Arsenal Must Get This Summer Right
If the Gunners have learnt anything over the years, it is that they must get the summer transfer window right; it must be a summer of a good news. Now, more than ever, they cannot fail. In previous years, failure meant a drop into the Europa League. This time around, failure would potentially mean a permanent place in mid-table.
Mikel Arteta’s side have shown their potential since the turn of the year, but still stumbled to a disappointing finish. They have the foundation of talent for the future, but lack the experience necessary to carry the youthful hunger. The likes of Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe can lead the Gunners back to where they belong.
Add Odegaard in the summer, which is a priority according to the Athletic, and they have themselves an attacking force worthy of European football. If they do complete a permanent deal for the attacking midfielder, the attention must turn to fixing any other issues. And, as reported by the Athletic, they have shown interest in central defender Edmond Tapsoba.
Tapsoba Would Only Accelerate Arteta Project
As already mentioned, it is set to be a busy summer for Arsenal, who are in desperate need of a rebuild. And, so far, Arsenal fans will be happy with the transfer news. Deadwood looks likely to move on and fresh faces look certain to arrive. Among those fresh faces could be Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba.
The 22-year-old will be a wanted man this summer, that’s unquestionable, after helping Leverkusen to a sixth placed finish this season. After seeing how many opportunities young players get at the Emirates, too, the move may suit both parties. He, next to Gabriel, can form a formidable partnership should the move happen.
And, in a way, that’s the big question. It’s a matter of if for Arsenal when it comes to transfers. Before, their name alone could attract top players. Now, with no European football and not many signs of improvement, the attraction to join the club may have worn away over the years.
