According to Nizaar Kinsella of Goal, Arsenal have stepped up their interest in Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand. The experienced left-back will be available for free this summer following his contract expiry and could be the first player signed out of the Arsenal summer transfer targets.
The deal would certainly make sense, too. Bertrand has the experience necessary plus the fitness to step in when needed. This season, the Gunners have struggled to cover for Kieran Tierney’s constant injury issues. Cedric has occasionally filled in, as have Granit Xhaka and Bukayo Saka- who is more effective in attack.
Both Xhaka and Cedric have failed to replicate what is needed from a left-back, which comes as no surprise when considering that neither play there on a full time basis. By signing Bertrand, Arteta would solve his left-back struggles with an experienced and reliable player.

Joachim Andersen Also Among Targets in Summer
Following Fulham’s relegation from the Premier League, both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are in pole position, ready to compete, for the signing of Joachim Andersen this summer- according to Mike McGrath of the Telegraph. The central defender would help solve problems at both clubs.
For Arsenal, he could be a David Luiz replacement should he decide to leave when out of contract. As for Spurs, their struggles at the back is becoming an increasing concern. Eric Dier seems their best option and even he is often questionable. Joe Rodon lacks experience but has shown his quality. Signing Andersen could see the Welshman form a formidable partnership.
Unable to compete when it comes to trophies these days, it looks as though the clubs will instead go head to head in the transfer market. Both are in desperate need of an overhaul and rebuild this summer. Arsenal seem more prepared to develop their squad, however.
According to reports, once the defender returns to Lyon, he will be valued at £20 million.
