The news comes with travel restrictions in Germany preventing Liverpool from travelling to Leipzig for the game, therefore leaving the Bundesliga club with no choice but to find another venue.
Earlier reports suggested that it was between the Puskas Arena and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. In the end, the stadium in Budapest was given the green light to host the game.
UEFA Confirm Venue for Leipzig v Liverpool
Further to Travel
The news will perhaps frustrate Liverpool who will now be forced to travel further than originally planned. Nonetheless, Jurgen Klopp’s side can also see the venue change as a positive with Leipzig without their home advantage.
As for Leipzig, they’ll be feeling plenty of frustrations themselves having had their home advantage taken away. It does have to be said, however, that they’ll likely be glad to see the game in Budapest and not London as earlier reports suggested.
Liverpool’s form in London indicates that they would have thrived in the capital. Jurgen Klopp’s side have won all their away games this season in London with a 7-0 win over Crystal Palace, a 2-0 win against Chelsea, and a 3-1 win against Spurs.
No doubt about it, the venue change makes the tie all the more interesting with Leipzig’s home advantage stripped, and both sides asked to travel further.
As the clash approaches, and both sides begin to prepare, it will certainly be interesting to see how the change of venue damages each side. One would think that Liverpool, already prepared for an away trip, will be better prepared than Leipzig who would have been hoping for a home game but for the travel restrictions in place.
