Shkodran Mustafi has become the latest Arsenal player to terminate his contract before completing a move to Schalke.
The news comes with Mustafi struggling for game time at the Emirates and Schalke seemingly in need of a central defender as Ozan Kabak completed a move to Liverpool.
The World Cup winner becomes the third Arsenal player to terminate his contract at the club with Mesut Ozil and Sokratis having already done so earlier this month.
Shkodran Mustafi Joins Schalke
Much-Needed Addition of Experience for Schalke
With Schalke sitting rock bottom and nine points adrift of safety in the Bundesliga, experience is needed if they want to guide themselves to safety; something Mustafi can offer.
The Arsenal man is a World Cup winner and has featured on the biggest stages of world football. He may not be at the peak of his powers, but with Kabak’s exit looking increasingly likely, Schalke had no choice but to act.
Mustafi’s arrival could signal a much-needed upturn in form as the Bundesliga side look to complete the impossible by surviving the drop. Mustafi will certainly sure up a rather chaotic backline.
Instant Replacement for Kabak
With Ozan Kabak completing a move away, Mustafi provides Schalke with the perfect replacement. The German ticks all the boxes with experience in abundance for the price of nothing.
With time running out to complete any deal, all parties acted quickly to get it done. As for Mustafi, he’ll welcome the chance to return to his homeland and get back to playing first-team football.
As for Schalke, they’ll be delighted with the move, having been in desperate need for an experienced leader at the back all season in the Bundesliga.
The task will now be to do the impossible by overhauling the nine-point gap between themselves and relegation.
