Football Transfer Rumours: Middlesbrough Forward Duncan Watmore Wanted
Premier League and EFL Clubs Eyeing Winger
According to recent reports, several clubs are interested in former Sunderland forward Duncan Watmore. Following his excellent form since signing a short-term deal, the 26-year-old is attracting interest from West Bromwich Albion and Burnley in the Premier League. Swansea City and Stoke City in the Championship are also keen on the former England U21 international.
Struggling West Brom under new manager Sam Allardyce will be looking for extra firepower to help their relegation fight. Watmore, who will become a free agent in two weeks should he not sign a new deal, could be perfect for Allardyce.
Burnley, who are sitting just above the relegation zone in the Premier League, are also expected to look for reinforcements during the January transfer window. Watmore has caught the eye after scoring four goals in seven appearances since he signed a six-week deal at Boro last month.
Neil Warnock Has His Say on Duncan Watmore
Following rumours that Duncan Watmore could be set for a move to Championship rivals Norwich City in January, Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock said: “Listen, if he wanted to go to Norwich then I wouldn’t stand in his way, not after the injuries he’s had. He’s a fabulous lad.
“But I will say, if he did go to Norwich, it will be the biggest mistake he ever makes. That’s all I can say on that. It doesn’t worry me, players turning me down. I just think it’s their loss.
“I think he’d be stupid to leave this club, team and myself. This season for him shouldn’t be about money. It should be about him playing games after his injuries. He fits in so well with us and he’s a lovely lad. I think he’d be an idiot to leave us. But hey, sometimes that’s how it goes. You win some, you lose some.”
Career Back on Track
Last summer, Sunderland released Watmore following a nightmare few seasons for both club and player. As the Black Cats slipped from the Premier League to League One, Watmore suffered two serious knee injuries, keeping him out of the squad for two years. Several other minor injuries also kept the pacy forward from playing on a regular basis.
Following the decision by Sunderland to allow the player to leave, Watmore began a trial at Middlesbrough. After impressing Warnock, a short-term deal was agreed. Following his form since signing, Warnock and Boro will not want to lose him. However, with his deal coming to an end they may be powerless to stop him leaving should he wish to do so.
