Marco Giampaolo is a relatively unknown name to those who do not follow Serie A. The man born in Bellinzona, Switzerland, managed a few lower ranked Serie A sides before landing the Sampdoria job in 2016. Giampaolo performed really well at the Genoese club. In fact, he had his longest tenure there, managing 123 matches. His previous longest tenure was at Siena where he managed 50 matches. Sampdoria did well last season to finish in 9th position. Marco Giampaolo had the Serie A Capocannoniere, Fabio Quagliarella at his disposal. Sampdoria finished four places below AC Milan. However, Giampaolo’s team actually scored five more goals. So, a slightly more attacking approach is likely.

The AC Milan job will definitely be the biggest so far for the 51-year-old tactician. So, it will be interesting to see how Marco Giampaolo performs. Will he be able to make the step up in his career?

A Difficult Job

The job at AC Milan is really difficult for many reasons. The club was in serious financial trouble before Elliott Management Corp. took over. Things have been a bit better under them. However, the failure to qualify for the Champions League means a limited transfer budget to work with for Marco Giampaolo. One could say that was the primary reason behind AC Milan going for Giampaolo. The fans demand success. They also want good football at AC Milan. Furthermore, they yearn for a return to the glory days of the ’90s. Football fans are hardly known to be realistic. So, he will have his work cut out for him. Giampaolo will not be able to match the enthusiasm of Gennaro Gattuso that is for sure.
