Sunderland today announced the signing of Northern Ireland international striker Will Grigg. He has signed from Wigan Athletic for a fee believed to be around £3 million. The Black Cats have been chasing the prolific striker all window and, today, they have finally got their man.
Will Grigg Signs For Sunderland
The Black Cats have been chasing Grigg all January but bid after bid was rejected by Wigan. Earlier this month, Sunderland had reportedly matched the valuation given to the striker by his club. However, it appeared that Wigan kept changing their valuation.
Sixth Time lucky
After five bids were rejected, a sixth and final offer was accepted, much to the delight and relief to all connected to Sunderland. Contingency plans had been activated, which included bids for other targets. However, these, too, were rejected. In the end, the Black Cats were relentless and got their man.
Prolific in League One
Manager Jack Ross had been desperate to find a proven goalscorer in League One. After losing top scorer Josh Maja, Ross needed a new man to fire his team to promotion. In Grigg, it appears they have that player. In his last three League One campaigns, the Northern Ireland international has scored 20, 25 and 19 goals respectively. The striker has been less successful in the Championship this season. However, he has been in and out of the Wigan side that has failed to keep a settled team.
Promotion Fight is On
Sunderland, with their new signings, look all set to battle it out for automatic promotion. The Black Cats are currently fifth in the table but have games in hand. After strengthening defence, midfield and forward positions, confidence is now high. Promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking was the target. After a tough January, Sunderland could now be a force to be reckoned with.
