The big LeBron James question remains unanswered, despite free agency ending over a fortnight ago. And its biggest impact is on the Miami Heat, who are stuck in limbo, waiting for a final decision from the legend that could either change their luck or send it in another direction altogether.
But while they wait to hunt another big whale, there still are a couple of strong options to pursue that could prove to be an effective replacement for James, should things go south.
Two best LeBron James substitutes for the Miami Heat
Last Thursday, the Heat held a conference where new acquisitions Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis were proudly introduced as new members. But when asked about James, president Pat Riley said they held discussions a week ago and, like everyone else, are waiting for an answer. Meanwhile, Miami has been keeping an eye on these two players in case the deal does not work out.
Bradley Beal
A long-standing suitable candidate for the Heat, Bradley Beal was also widely considered the perfect backup option for Antetokounmpo for a long time. The LA Clippers shooting guard has declined his $5.6 million player option and is currently an unrestricted free agent. After that, he was heavily linked to the Heat again as the team has expressed interest in him during the previous offseason.
While Beal was limited to six games due to a hip injury and subsequent recovery, he remains effective offensively. The three-time NBA All-Star also shares a mutual interest in playing for Miami, where he could add scoring depth. He could also prove useful at secondary playmaking and floor spacing.
The Heat understand that Beal would be advantageous for the team but are taking things slow. According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, last week the Heat’s back office had limited discussions with Beal’s representatives and at the moment “hasn’t pursued him vigorously.” They still have around $7 million to offer for a mid-level exception.
Demar DeRozan
According to Jackson, another name that interests Miami these days is DeMar DeRozan. The small forward of the Sacramento Kings was on a three-year, $74 million contract in a sign-and-trade deal but was waived by them in early July and is now an unrestricted free agent. The 36-year-old seasoned veteran could provide the Heat with dependable half-court shot creation and mid-range scoring, and could also aid in late-game playmaking.
Miami’s half-court offense can be unproductive at times, and DeRozan could take charge there. He is also skilled in clutch time and making swift passes to open teammates. Not only could he fit their roster as a high-scoring sixth man, but he could also provide veteran leadership. And after being bought out by the Kings, DeRozan could take a low-cost deal that fits the Heat budget. But just like Beal, Miami is also holding off on a decision on him, as James could flip the script at any moment.
Wait for James’ Decision Continues
James has everyone on a string while he takes his time making one of the most important decisions of his career and of the league this year. His agent, Rich Paul, has also mentioned that James is evaluating teams based on defensive rating, the coaching staff, offensive structure, and late-game execution, which might be causing the delay. Nevertheless, the Heat remains hopeful about locking him in. And indeed, his team-up with Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo could be the biggest threat on the court.
Miami is a strong front-runner to claim a stake, but could fall on its face if James chooses to skedaddle. Hence, being prepared with backup options that suit them best is the wisest course of action.
