Dort has officially arrived in Atlanta, and the Hawks may have just completed their biggest move of the offseason.
Lu Dort Traded to the Atlanta Hawks in Blockbuster Deal
According to ESPN senior NBA insider Shams Charania, the Hawks acquired Lu Dort from the Oklahoma City Thunder in a three-team trade that sent former No. 1 overall pick Zaccharie Risacher to the Dallas Mavericks, finally ending Atlanta’s partnership with a young player who struggled to establish a consistent role. While Atlanta has already had an eventful offseason that included drafting Kingston Flemings with the No. 8 overall pick, adding Dort may ultimately prove to be the move that most changes the team’s identity.
The Hawks entered the offseason looking to become tougher, more athletic and more difficult to score against. President of basketball operations Onsi Saleh has repeatedly spoken about building a roster capable of sustaining success through versatility, defense and smart roster construction. The acquisition of Dort checks every one of those boxes.
Dort Gives Atlanta One Of The NBA’s Best Defensive Perimeters
Atlanta already possessed one of the NBA’s better defensive units last season, finishing among the league’s top 10 defenses. Now, the Hawks may have assembled one of the most intimidating perimeter defensive groups in basketball.
Dort joins reigning former Defensive Player of the Year runner-up Dyson Daniels and fellow defensive standout Nickeil Alexander-Walker, giving Atlanta three elite perimeter defenders capable of guarding multiple positions. Very few teams can consistently place that level of defensive pressure on opposing guards and wings throughout an entire game.
Dort’s resume speaks for itself.
He earned All-NBA Defensive Team honors because of his physical style of play, relentless competitiveness, and ability to frustrate some of the league’s best scorers. His strength allows him to defend larger wings, while his quickness enables him to stay in front of explosive guards.
Adding a player with that skill set immediately raises Atlanta’s defensive ceiling.
It would not be surprising if the Hawks finished among the NBA’s top five defenses next season. With Daniels generating steals, Alexander-Walker providing length, and Dort bringing physicality, opposing backcourts will have an extremely difficult time finding consistent success.
Atlanta Added More Than Just Defense
Although Dort has built his reputation as an elite defender, his offensive game should not be overlooked.
Last season, he shot 34 percent from three-point range while continuing to improve his confidence as a catch-and-shoot threat. He does not need the basketball in his hands to impact winning, making him an ideal complement to Atlanta’s existing core.
His willingness to defend, move without the ball, and knock down open perimeter shots makes him exactly the type of role player every contender values.
The move also fits perfectly alongside the Hawks’ other offseason additions.
Atlanta previously acquired Aaron Wiggins, another versatile wing who can contribute on both ends of the floor. The Hawks also brought back veteran guard C.J. McCollum and Jock Landale to strengthen the frontcourt rotation.
When viewed individually, each move improves a specific weakness. Collectively, they demonstrate a front office executing a clear vision.
Saleh recognized where the Hawks fell short after their postseason loss to the eventual NBA champion New York Knicks. Instead of chasing star power, Atlanta has focused on improving its overall depth, versatility and defensive identity.

That approach may not immediately make the Hawks championship favorites, but it certainly makes them significantly more difficult to play against.
The addition of Dort especially changes how opponents must prepare for Atlanta on a nightly basis. Few teams can consistently attack perimeter defenders of his caliber, and his presence should make life easier for everyone else in the rotation.
The Hawks now have the personnel to consistently pressure opposing ball handlers while creating more transition opportunities off turnovers. That should fit perfectly with Quin Snyder’s preferred style of play.
Atlanta wants to force mistakes, get out in transition, and score before opposing defenses become organized. Dort’s defensive intensity directly supports that philosophy while giving the Hawks another dependable veteran who can thrive in meaningful games.
The Eastern Conference remains competitive, but Atlanta has quietly positioned itself as one of the conference’s most intriguing teams. Between Kingston Flemings, Aaron Wiggins, C.J. McCollum, Jock Landale and now Dort, the Hawks have addressed nearly every weakness that surfaced throughout last season.
No single move guarantees championship contention, but this offseason has clearly made Atlanta a better basketball team. If the Hawks continue to defend at a high level while their young core continues to develop, finishing among the top four teams in the Eastern Conference may no longer be viewed as an unrealistic goal.
