Can Clips Compartmentalize Kawhi Leonard Contract Drama?
When the Clippers signed Leonard in 2019, they thought they had landed the Big Kahuna. He had just led the Toronto Raptors to the first championship in franchise history and the second of his career. His trophy case included two Finals MVP awards and two Defensive Player of the Year trophies. After coming into the league primarily known for his perimeter defense and 3-ball, he had developed into one of the most technically sound scorers in the league.
To be fair, Leonard and the Clippers have reached the playoffs in five of the last six seasons. Yet, L.A. has had just one Western Conference Finals appearance and three first-round playoff exits. In that time, Leonard’s constant appearance on the injury report has been their biggest obstacle. Now, his strong-arm negotiating tactics have culminated in an NBA investigation that puts his future with the franchise in question.
