Could the Indiana Pacers be LeBron James’ Next Team?

The Pacers may be emerging as LeBron James’ next team. As rumors continue to circulate, Indiana has intriguingly joined the conversation. James’ next destination has been widely speculated over the past weeks, and the Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Minnesota Timberwolves have been the frontrunners to land LeBron.

Could the Indiana Pacers be LeBron James’ Next Team?

Among the favorite teams to land James, sending voice memos, making pitches, and doing whatever they can to get the 4x MVP, the Indiana Pacers have not been rumored to be doing any such efforts. However, there have been small, possibly telling signs that LeBron’s next team will be with the Pacers.

James, having announced that he would depart from the Los Angeles Lakers to explore free agency, is looking for a new destination, with the common assumption that he is chasing a ring. James is expected to join a team that has the potential to win the NBA Finals, giving LeBron one last championship before he ends his career. By prioritizing winning, LeBron will likely sign with a new team on a smaller contract to be more cap-friendly for his future suitor.

Why Indiana could be LeBron James’ Next Team

The LeBron-to-the-Indiana-Pacers rumors are unsupported by facts, but there have been telling signs that could reveal LeBron may indeed end up in Indiana next season. James does have a solid relationship with Pacers’ star guard Tyrese Haliburton, and on top of that, at this year’s Fanatics Fest, LeBron will host a live version of his podcast, “Mind The Game,” and will have Haliburton on the podcast as a special guest.

With the day LeBron announces his decision approaching, many Pacers fans have speculated that LeBron will make his decision on the podcast, joined by Haliburton. Holding to the slim silver lining this upcoming event presents for the Indiana Pacers, it definitely offers an unconventional yet not entirely unrealistic reason why LeBron could be joining Indiana.

What would the Pacers look like with LeBron?

Having signed Kelly Oubre Jr., a good fit for the Pacers at the forward position, and adding Larry Nance Jr., Indiana has already made multiple moves in free agency. The Pacers have basically no salary cap space, and adding LeBron to the mix would require them to make room by trading and waiving multiple players. On the bright side, LeBron will probably sign a smaller contract to help his future team’s salary cap efforts, which would make the Pacers’ decisions about whom to move on from a little easier.

On the court, LeBron would presumably replace Andrew Nembhard, and Nembhard would come off the bench. With a starting five of Haliburton, Pascal Siakam, LeBron, Aaron Nesmith, and Ivica Zubac, Indiana’s lineup would be loaded with versatility on both sides of the ball and a dangerous scoring threat. Along with an explosive starting five, the starters would be complemented by Indiana’s well-known bench depth. Adding James to the roster could make for a dangerous Pacers team that could easily find its way back to the NBA Finals.

The Reality of Indiana Being LeBron James’ Next Team

Realistically, Indiana has a very slim chance of being LeBron James’ Next Team. However, they should not be completely ruled out. With the slim chance that LeBron joins thanks to his relationship with Haliburton, Indiana’s already excellent team could become even more bolstered. If James truly is looking to join a Finals contender, and he is chasing a ring, Indiana’s talented roster would be a good destination for LeBron, with the team already having Finals aspirations. The likelihood of James joining is very small, but the possibility that LeBron could join Indiana is definitely worth looking into.
