Golden State Warriors Star Not Ruling Out Exit

Golden State Warriors General Manager Mike Dunleavy

This offseason has been one of the most interesting for the Golden State Warriors. The team moved on from players like Chris Paul and Dario Saric. However, no loss impacted the Warriors more than Klay Thompson‘s departure to join the Dallas Mavericks. Thompson spent the first 13 years of his career in Golden State, winning four championships and being a part of a dynasty in the process. The Warriors won a championship just two years ago, but it is clear the dynasty that took over the 2010s is no more. Now, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green are the only players from the 2015 championship team still on the roster. It is fair to assume both players will end their careers in Golden State, but it does not appear to be a guarantee.

Recently, Curry spoke about Thompson’s departure and what his career plans are. The 36-year-old revealed that, although he would like to stay with the Warriors for the rest of his career, he did not rule out ending his career elsewhere.

“It’s tough, right? I’ve always said I want to be a Warrior for life. At this stage in my career, I feel like that’s possible. And you can still be a competitive, it doesn’t mean you guaranteed the championship. It doesn’t mean winning. Winning is always a priority, but obviously you’re realistic. It doesn’t mean that it’s going to happen if you stay the course. You need to shake things up and keep reimagining what it looks like to evolve with what league is at right now, with where some of these talented teams are now,” Curry said.

“Let’s put it this way, it’s a longwinded way of saying that it if it is a situation where you’re a bottom feeder and it’s just because you want to stay there, I’d have a hard time with that. But I don’t think that’s going to be the reality.”

Curry has spent his entire 15-year career with the Warriors up to this point. Furthermore, he has solidified himself as a future Hall of Famer and one of the NBA’s greatest point guards ever.

Warriors Are Pursuing a Stephen Curry Extension

Earlier this month, Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy spoke about the team’s plans after Thompson joined the Mavericks. Dunleavy made it clear that extending Curry, whose contract runs through the 2025-26 season, is a big priority.

If Curry eventually signs an extension with Golden State, it is likely confirmed he will eventually end his career with the team.

The Last Word

If Curry retired from basketball today, he is undoubtedly a Hall of Famer. He has the MVPs, the championships, the records, etc. It is interesting, however, that, despite his success, he is still not satisfied. Chances are that the Davidson alum will not join another team in his career. However, the fact that Curry is at least floating the idea of leaving the Warriors is noteworthy.
