Los Angeles Clippers Favorites to Land Former Champion

The Los Angeles Clippers

After spending the 2023-24 season with the Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers, veteran point guard Kyle Lowry is set to hit unrestricted free agency this offseason. Despite having 18 NBA seasons under his belt, the six-time All-Star is not ready to call it a career just yet. And although Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Lowry returning to Philadelphia seemed likely, there are other teams interested in his services. According to Bovada, the Los Angeles Clippers (+180) are the favorites to land the 2019 champion if he does not re-sign with the 76ers.

Following the Clippers are the Los Angeles Lakers (+300), Phoenix Suns (+300), Toronto Raptors (+300), New Orleans Pelicans (+550), and Golden State Warriors (+600).

In February, Lowry signed with the 76ers after the Charlotte Hornets cut him immediately after trading for him. With the 76ers, Lowry appeared in 23 games and started 20 of them during the regular season. In those games, he averaged 8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game.

Why Kyle Lowry is an Intriguing Target for the Clippers

Lowry is still a solid point guard who has championship experience. Additionally, he is a good veteran leader with a strong presence in the locker room. In April, Paul Reed spoke about what it meant to have someone like Lowry on the team.

“He does a lot, man,” Reed told Sixers Wire. “Having a veteran guy like that, that has experience and championship games and knows ins and outs of the NBA and referees and all that. I mean, it’s a huge plus because he’s a great leader. He leads. Not just me, but he leads everybody on the team and guiding everybody to do the right thing. He’s like a coach for real.”

Furthermore, the Clippers may need more depth at the point guard position next season. Point guard Russell Westbrook has a $4.03 million player option for next season. Currently, it is unknown if Westbrook will opt in or not. Additionally, James Harden, who has run the point for the Clippers at times, is an unrestricted free agent this summer. If the team loses either or both players, they could be in the market to add another veteran point guard.

Additionally, Lowry signing with the Clippers would reunite him with star forward Kawhi Leonard. The two won a championship in their only season as teammates with the Toronto Raptors in 2019.

The Last Word on Kyle Lowry

With Lowry now 38 years old, it is likely his career is coming to an end soon. Because of this, there is a chance this is the last contract he signs in the NBA team. He already has one championship, but it would be smart to aim for another before it is all said and done. Lowry will likely have many suitors during the summer. It will be interesting to see where he lands for his 19th NBA season.
