Cam Thomas has become a national household name for the LSU Tigers basketball program. On Tuesday night, LSU defeated the Texas A&M Aggies 77-54 as the freshman scored 32 points. He becomes the first SEC player in 25 years to score more than 15 points in seven straight games. While his defensive game is good, Thomas is outstanding on offense.
Cam Thomas is LSU’s Key to Success
Instant Improvement
LSU went 21-10 last season and would have made the NCAA Tournament. This season, they are 6-1 and 1-0 in the SEC. Thomas continues to lead the way on offense. The freshman guard has scored over 20 points five times in seven games which leads the nation currently. He leads the team in points per game at 22.8 per outing. The 6’4″ guard shoots 44.9% from the floor and has been a dominant factor in the team’s success so far.
Will Wade recruited a phenomenal class for 2020 that included Thomas, who is a former five-star recruit. While the program has other great players like Trendon Watford and Darius Days, Thomas has taken over in Baton Rouge. His athleticism at both ends of the floor has propelled the team to five straight victories. Shareef O’Neal, who transferred from UCLA, has been dealing with injuries that have limited his playing time. If the Tigers get all of their starters averaging over 10 points per game, they will be dangerous come March.
The Best is Yet to Come
Being just a freshman, Thomas is paving the way for future stars to have success in Baton Rouge. Although he could be a one and done player, his legacy at LSU will be forever enshrined within the program. What he has accomplished in just seven games is remarkable. With at least 18 games left on the season, the nation will soon learn of his greatness. Despite currently being unranked, the Tigers program may have solidified their claim to be ranked next week. But, a big match-up against the 3-1 Florida Gators looms on Saturday in Gainesville.
Thomas’ ability to score inside the post and at the mid-range level has been a big momentum boost. Going into the season, LSU fans were unsure of just how good the 2020-21 team would be. However, the first seven games have shown that this team is destined for another run at an SEC Championship and NCAA Tournament berth. Getting Watford back was huge for his sophomore season. But no one thought Thomas would be this good of a player already. He is establishing himself as an elite player in college basketball with many games left.
Tuesday’s win over Texas A&M only gave Tigers fans more hope for a great season. His 32 points are the most he has scored in a single game this season. Against Nicholls State last week, the freshman dropped 29 points in an 86-80 win. Despite the tough slate in conference play, LSU basketball is in good hands with Thomas on the court. SEC teams will find out quickly that it is hard to contain Thomas from scoring. While he lacks strength, his ability to score anywhere on the floor is pushing the Tigers to immediate success.
