Monday night’s contest between the Los Angeles Clippers and Houston Rockets was a night of milestones, most notably for Paul Pierce, who passed John Havlicek to reach number 15 on the NBA’s All-Time Scoring List.
Paul Pierce Passes John Havlicek to Reach 15th on All-Time Scoring List
Los Angeles Clipper Paul Pierce scored 10 points in seven minutes against the Houston Rockets Monday night to pass Boston Celtics legend and Basketball Hall of Famer John Havlicek on the NBA’s All-Time Scoring List. Pierce is now 15th on the list, with 26,397 points.
The Clippers rolled over the Rockets in the match-up, 125-96
Pierce’s record setting shot came off a drive from the left side of the basket with 2:45 left in the fourth quarter. Pierce was fouled by the Rocket’s Troy Williams, causing the ball to bounce off his elbow and take a lucky flip down the hole for a 3-point play opportunity.
After missing the free throw, Pierce exited the game to a standing ovation.
Doc Rivers joked about Pierce’s accomplishment after the game, noting how impressive it was for a 54 year-old to sit so long and then just start scoring.
Chris Paul was a little more reflective on Pierce’s achievement and status as a basketball legend.
Rivers Passes Dunleavy for Most Wins in Franchise History
Pierce was not the only Clipper to celebrate a personal milestone Monday night. With the victory over the Rockets, Doc Rivers celebrated his 216th win as a Clippers head coach, the most in franchise history.
Rivers passed Mike Dunleavy, who has 215 wins with the franchise.
Clippers Set Franchise Record for Most Triples in a Single Season
As a team the Clippers also set a new record during their win over the Rockets: most three-point field goals made in a single season.
The Clippers were 10 for 26 from behind the arc, bringing them to 831 made triples for the season.
One Win Away from Home Court Advantage in Round 1
The Clippers strong finish in the regular season (10-2 in last 12 games), has put them in good position for Round One of the Playoffs. A win on Wednesday clinches home court advantage for the Clippers, who will face a formidable Utah Jazz.
Game One of Round One of the Western Conference Playoffs is set for Saturday, April 15.
