Outfielder’s Future Uncertain as Cubs Explore Trades

The Chicago Cubs are actively pursuing a trade for outfielder Seiya Suzuki, as reported by Joel Sherman of The New York Post. This strategic move aims to redirect savings toward bolstering other positions on the roster. With an overcrowded outfield, the Cubs are motivated to make a change. Pete Crow-Armstrong has emerged as a strong defensive center fielder, and if he enhances his offensive game, he could bring tremendous value. Meanwhile, the presence of Suzuki, Cody Bellinger, and Ian Happ competing for corner spots has created a logjam that the Cubs must address this offseason.

Seiya Suzuki Trade Rumors Intensify

The Cubs are navigating several challenges as they contemplate trading an outfielder to streamline their crowded roster. Young talents like Crow-Armstrong, Kevin Alcántara and Owen Caissie present an enticing combination of affordability and long-term promise. At the same time, veterans Happ, Bellinger, and Suzuki are set to become free agents after the 2026 season, with Bellinger holding an opt-out clause for 2025. However Suzuki’s full no-trade clause limits the Cubs’ flexibility in finding a trade partner.

Chicago’s readiness to trade Suzuki will generate significant interest across the league. Over his three seasons in the major leagues, Suzuki has consistently excelled at the plate, boasting a batting line of .278/.354/.470, 55 home runs, and an impressive 129 wRC+.

Suzuki’s plate discipline has shown steady improvement. His walk rate has increased from 9.4% to 10.1% and then to 10.8% over his three years in the majors. This upward trajectory directly correlates with the rise in his wRC+, which improved from 118 in his rookie year to 128 and then 138 in subsequent seasons.

The Cubs are eyeing several key free agents to bolster their roster. According to The Post, the team has expressed interest in catcher Carson Kelly and relievers Andrew Chafin and Kirby Yates. Although Danny Jansen was also on their radar, he recently signed a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Rays.

With Jansen off the market, the Cubs may focus on adding Kelly, Chafin, or Yates to enhance their competitiveness. Meanwhile, the team continues to explore trade options, including a potential deal involving Seiya Suzuki. While a trade is far from certain, the Cubs are working to balance their roster and build for the future.
