Dodgers Win NL Pennant, Setting Up Star-Studded World Series vs. Yankees

The Los Angeles Dodgers knocked off the New York Mets 10-5 in Game 6 of the NLCS Sunday night to win the National League pennant. They now advance to the 2024 World Series, where they will face the American League champion New York Yankees, who secured their 41st AL pennant on Saturday.

Dodgers Knock Off Mets in Six Games to Win NL Pennant

Despite a blowout loss in Game 5, the Dodgers were sitting pretty coming back home to LA. With two chances to close out the series, they opted for a bullpen game on Sunday. Michael Kopech kicked things off, and the Mets struck first off him with their backs still against the wall. Francisco Lindor drew a leadoff walk and eventually came around to score on an infield single by Pete Alonso.

The Mets would need a strong outing from Sean Manaea to both keep them in the game and preserve the bullpen. Unfortunately for them, it did not work out that way. The Dodgers answered in the bottom of the first, as eventual series MVP Tommy Edman doubled in Shohei Ohtani and Teoscar Hernández, who both singled earlier in the frame. It snowballed in the third inning, as Edman hit a two-run homer to make it 4-1, and Will Smith followed suit with a two-run shot of his own.

To their credit, though, these Mets never quit. A two-run homer by Mark Vientos in the fifth made it 6-3 and kept New York in the game. But from there it was death by a thousand cuts. Ohtani tacked on an RBI single in the sixth to extend the Dodgers’ lead to four. A Francisco Alvarez sacrifice fly made it 7-4, but the Mets’ failures with runners in scoring position all night became their ultimate undoing. The Dodgers scored three more in the eighth to put the game out of reach. A Mookie Betts RBI double, a Teoscar Hernández sac fly, and a Kiké Hernández RBI single made it 10-4 Los Angeles. A last-minute rally by the Mets led to one more run in the ninth on a Jeff McNeil single, but Blake Treinen closed out the five-run win.

The Fall Classic

Thus ends a magical October run by the Mets, and the Dodgers’ postseason bounceback continues after several disappointments since 2020. Sunday’s result sets up a star-studded World Series matchup with the Yankees beginning on Friday. It is their 12th meeting all-time in the Fall Classic, dating back to the Dodgers’ time in Brooklyn, and the first since 1981. Both sides feature some of the best players in the sport, and with the top two media markets in the nation involved, it is sure to generate some of the biggest ratings for a World Series in recent memory.
