Tigers Promote Elite Pitching Prospect in Bullpen Role for Postseason Push

The Detroit Tigers announced Monday that they are calling up top pitching prospect Jackson Jobe. Before the Tigers begin a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday at Comerica Park, they will select Jobe’s contract. The right-hander will pitch out of the bullpen and Detroit will designate Shelby Miller for assignment.  MLB Pipeline ranks Jobe as the No. 2 prospect (behind Max Clark) on the Tigers and No. 6 overall, making him the highest-ranked pitching prospect in baseball.

Jackson Jobe Joining Detroit Tigers Postseason Push

The Kansas City Royals and the Tigers are tied for the second American League Wild Card spot. They have a one-game lead over the Minnesota Twins as Detroit eyes to end a near-decade postseason drought. Jobe was the Tigers’ top pick in the 2021 MLB Draft as the No. 3 pick out of Heritage Hall in Oklahoma City. He’s been in High-A (three starts), Double-A (16 starts) and Triple-A (two starts) this season. Jobe had a 5-3 record with a 2.36 ERA, 96 strikeouts, and 45 walks in 91 2/3 innings.

Jobe’s fastball sits around 97 mph that’s accompanied by a slider, changeup and cutter. His cutter and changeup are the best secondary pitches in his mix while using his cutter as a hybrid between the fastball and slider.

Detroit enters the final homestand of the season, staring at the Wild Card picture as the control their destiny. The Royals have lost seven straight. The Twins lost both games of a doubleheader Sunday. That means if they were to win out their final six-games, they would make the postseason. However, the Tigers don’t’ hold the tiebreaker advantage over the Twins or Royals, a factor that will be relevant. Since August 13, Detroit’s 26-11 record is the best in MLB.

More to come.
