Mets Pitching Plans Altered as Right-Hander Faces Season-Ending Procedure

A key member of the New York Mets pitching staff, Christian Scott, will undergo a hybrid Tommy John surgery and internal brace procedure next week, effectively ending his season. The surgery was announced by his agent, Nate Heisler of Klutch Sports. The 25-year-old right-hander, who made his MLB debut in May, has been sidelined since July with a sprained elbow. Despite a throwing program, Mets medical staff chose surgery over return bid.

This setback will likely keep him out for most of next season, dealing a significant blow to New York’s pitching depth. Before his injury, he showed promise with nine starts at Triple-A Syracuse before his major league call-up.

Christian Scott to Undergo Season-Ending Surgery

Scott posted a 4.56 ERA with a 19.8 percent strikeout and 6.1 percent walk rate in 47 1/3 innings. He breezed through the minors over the last two seasons, accumulating sub-3.00 ERAs at High-A through Triple-A.

The Mets pitching corps has taken a hit with Christian Scott’s season-ending surgery, compounding the loss of Kodai Senga and Paul Blackburn. Blackburn’s year was cut short due to a spinal fluid leak in his back.
As the team focuses on securing its Wild Card position, the looming offseason poses significant questions. The starting rotation, already thinning, will require reinforcement. Luis Severino and Jose Quintana will become free agents, and Sean Manaea is expected to opt out of his contract. The front office faces a critical task in retooling the rotation to ensure the Mets are competitive in 2025.

The Mets (83-68) enter Wednesday tied with the Arizona Diamondbacks for the National League’s second Wild Card spot. Next week’s three-game series at Atlanta will be pivotal, as it will determine the season series and potential tiebreaker against the Braves. That could dictate which of the clubs punch their ticket to the postseason at season’s end on September 29.
