Another Calf Injury Sends All-Star Shortstop to Injured List

It’s been a tough summer for the Toronto Blue Jays. Even when the Blue Jays welcomed Yimi García back from the 15-day injured list, another injury occurred. Last night, Blue Jays All-Star shortstop Bo Bichette exited the game after the sixth inning. Bichette limped out of the batter’s box after hitting a line drive to right field. It was announced after the game that Bichette suffered a right calf injury. This was the same calf strain Bichette dealt with, ultimately landing him on the injured list last month. His setback has now forced the Blue Jays to place Bichette back on the IL. Addison Barger is back up.

Bo Bichette’s Calf Strain Could Lead to Another IL Stint

Bichette’s early exit marked the third calf strain of the season. He is dealing with many injuries, which can be a concern to many. Last season, Bichette hit the IL in early August with tendinitis in his right knee. Eight games following his return, he hit the IL once again with a right quad strain. Both injuries came to the area of his right knee. This season, it’s a different story with the calf injuries, which is also on the right side. This strain is the third notable injury to that area in less than a month. It would not be the right time to deal with Bichette, even if the Blue Jays continue to freefall in the standings.

Bichette is having the most challenging season of his career. He’s hitting a dismal .222/.275/.320 with four home runs. Even though Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. have been the subject of trade rumors, general manager Ross Atkins isn’t keen on moving either player by July 30. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reported last week that the Blue Jays are aiming to move impending free agents. Bichette is under contract for $16.5 million next season and will be a free agent afterward.
