In the early hours of Sunday morning, it was announced that Miami Marlins pitching phenom Jose Fernandez has died at age 24 in a tragic boating accident.
This is a tragic loss for the baseball community as a whole. No specific details about the incident have been released to the general public as of this writing. The only information about the accident was that it appears Fernandez, along with two others, died after crashing.
Jose Fernandez Has Died at Age 24
The Marlins organisation released a statement only minutes ago. In it they state that they are “devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.” It will obviously be a overwhelming time for all parties involved. We at LWOB will be here to update the story as more details about this tragic incident are released.
The Marlins and Atlanta Braves, along with Major League Baseball, have announced that today’s game has been cancelled. This is the proper decision for Rob Manfred to make under the circumstances. Many other teams have already announced plans to honour Fernandez before their games today.
Jose Fernandez broke into the league in 2013, immediately becoming a star. Going 12-6 while striking out 187 in only 172 innings pitched on route to winning the Rookie of the Year award. He was also named an All-Star twice. He was widely considered the front runner for this year’s National League Cy Young Award. With 253 strikeouts in only 182.1 innings, he was having an exceptional season. Jose Fernandez had the skills and passion for the game to not only become a Hall of Fame pitcher but also a beacon for the next generation of baseball superstars.
All of our thoughts and prayers go out to the Fernandez family in the difficult time. As well as the families of the other deceased.
Rest in peace Jose Fernandez (1992-2016)
