Spencer’s Best Bets for Baseball: July 28th

Best Bets July 28th

Aaaaand Best Bets is back! As there were no official plays yesterday, there are no picks to recap this morning. Instead, I wanted to take a moment to appreciate the fact that we are lucky enough to witness the greatest baseball player of all time, play baseball. Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim took on the Detroit Tigers in a doubleheader yesterday.

In the first game, Ohtani struck out eight and allowed only a single hit on his way to throwing his first complete game shutout. But wait, there’s more! Instead of taking the second game off, as most rational adults likely would, the machine wasn’t done. He proceeded to go yard in back-to-back at-bats, driving in three runs. Cementing the best single-day performance, the baseball world has ever seen. For the fantasy baseball fans among you, that’s 46 points in a single day for the big fella.

Anyway, enough drooling, let’s get into the picks.

On to Today’s Best Bets!

Angels @ Blue Jays

For today’s first play of the day we head across our northern border to Ontario where the Toronto Blue Jays host the Los Angeles Angels. Tonight marks the beginning of a three-game set between the two clubs. A series that will likely prove vital in the AL wild-card race once the dust settles at the end of the season. The Angels have proclaimed that they are all in this year. Snatching Ohtani off the trade block and adding veteran starting pitcher Lucas Giolito to the rotation. Giolito will be making his debut this evening, and it will likely be a tough one. He faces off against Kevin Gausman, who has been prolific for the Jays this season. Gausman leads in the AL in strikeouts and will have plenty of targets to add to his total this evening.

The Pick: Kevin Gausman Over 7.5 Ks (-128) 1U

Red Sox @ Giants

For our nightcap this evening we find ourselves in the Bay Area for a matchup between the Boston Red Sox, and the San Fransisco Giants. This pick pains me as Logan Webb has been a loyal servant to the cause up to this point, but it has finally come time to fade him. The simple truth is that the Red Sox are looking unstoppable in the month of July. Ripping off a six-game win streak a few weeks ago, and entering tonight on a four-game streak, fresh off a sweep of the Atlanta Braves at home. We are rolling with the hot hand.
