Superstar third baseman Manny Machado is signing an 11-year, $350 million contract extension with the San Diego Padres, per Jeff Passan.

Manny Machado Signs Extension
The news comes as something of a surprise, as the slugger had recently announced that he would be opting out after 2023. Manny Machado, 30, is seeking to build on an already successful Major League career. He’s coming off of 2022 which saw him slash .298/.366/.531, post a .898 OPS and finish second in NL MVP voting. His 6.8 WAR was fifth among all Major League position players and seventh overall. He also hit 32 home runs, drove in 102 runs, put up over 300 total bases, and made his sixth All-Star team.
The Career of Manny Machado
In his senior year of high school, Manny Machado hit .639 with 12 homers and 44 extra-base hits. This caught the eye of the Baltimore Orioles. They drafted Machado with the third overall pick in the 2010 Draft. It only took two years for him to break into the big leagues. However, it was in 2013 when the young star truly broke out. He won his first Gold Glove, made his first All-Star team, and finished in the top 10 in MVP voting. By 2015, he had become something of a household name. His time with the Orioles saw him net 162 homers, 977 hits, and four All-Star appearances in only 860 games.
Midway through 2018, Manny Machado was traded from the struggling Orioles to the contending Los Angeles Dodgers. Though he did not produce as well in Los Angeles, he was still able to help guide the team to a World Series appearance. After the season, he elected free agency and signed a five-year, $140 million with the Padres. Since then, he has produced a 17.6 WAR, made two more All-Star teams, and slugged 108 home runs. He’s won his first Silver Slugger and had two top-five MVP-voting finishes.
