Charlie Montoyo Out as Blue Jays Manager

The Toronto Blue Jays fired manager Charlie Montoyo from the organization. Montoyo has been the manager of Blue Jays since 2019. The split from the organization seems to be from the Blue Jays’ recent skid winning just 2 of their last 12 games. The firing followed a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in Toronto.

In his four seasons with the Blue Jays, Charlie Montoyo had a record of 236-236, the fifth most wins in Blue Jays history behind Jimmy Williams (281), Bobby Cox (355), and John Gibbons (793), and Cito Gaston (894). Montoyo signed a two-year extension with the Blue Jays at the beginning of the 2022 season.

Currently, the Blue Jays are 46-42, fourth place in the American League East, and hold a half-game lead on the Seattle Mariners for the final wild-card spot. The Blue Jays hope that the change in management could see them climb in the American League standings as they wish to play baseball in October.

The Blue Jays have promoted John Schneider as their interim manager. Schneider has been with the organization since 2008, most recently as the Blue Jays bench coach in 2019. Including his time as a minor league prospect, Schneider has been with the Toronto Blue Jays organization since 2002. After managing the Gulf Coast Blue Jays in 2008, he was promoted to Vancouver in 2010 at 30 years old, winning a championship in Vancouver the following season. In 2018 Schneider led the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher cats to an Eastern League title while players like Bo Bichette, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Cavan Biggio were on the team.

To replace John Schneider as bench coach is Casey Candaele. Candaele is a former member of the Montreal Expos and has been with the Blue Jays organization since January 2018. After starting out managing the Dunedin Blue Jays, Candaele was the manager of the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons before his promotion to the big leagues.
