Astros 9, Rangers 2
ARLINGTON, Texas, June 15 — Wednesday’s game was a tough one for fans as the Texas Rangers dropped their series finale to the Houston Astros by a final score of 9–2. Shortstop Corey Seager hit a home run in the bottom of the third inning for the Rangers, but it wasn’t enough. This loss cost the Rangers this series, and they are now 3–8 against Houston this year. From here, they head to the Motor City to start a four-game series against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park on Thursday evening.
Explosive First Inning
Six of the Astros’ nine runs came in the top of the first inning on Wednesday. Yordan Alvarez lined a two-run double to right field. This brought home Jose Altuve and Michael Brantley. Alex Bregman was able to advance to third base on the play. It would become 3–0 on a Kyle Tucker ground out that allowed Bregman to score. Alvarez moved to third base on the play. Then, an RBI single by Jose Siri drove in Alvarez to make it 4–0. The Astros’ last two runs of the inning came courtesy of a double by Martin Maldonado that allowed Siri and Aledmys Diaz to cross the plate.
The Astros wouldn’t score again until the top of the fourth inning when Maldonado blasted a solo shot to center field. This made the score 7–2 in favor of Houston. They plated their final two runs of the afternoon in the top of the eighth inning. A two-run home run by Yuli Gurriel the Houston ahead by a tally of 9–2
Rangers Drop Finale to Astros
Fans at Globe Life Field, all 24,992 of them, did not want to see the Rangers drop this series finale. Texas has struggled against the Astros this year. They could only manage to score two runs on Wednesday. The first of those runs came courtesy of Kole Calhoun. Calhoun reached base on a fielding error by Astros’ shortstop Aledmys Diaz. This brought home Adolis Garcia. In the bottom of the third inning, Corey Seager went deep to right field with a solo home run. The Rangers dropped this one, and they can only look toward future meetings against the Houston Astros. The nice thing about baseball is that there is always the next day.
Shaky Start
It was a rough outing for Tyson Miller, the young righty that started for the Rangers on Wednesday. He only managed to record two outs in the first inning before manager Chris Woodward came out to take the ball from him. In that inning, Miller gave up six runs, all earned, on four hits. He walked two, hit one batter, and he didn’t strike anyone out. He took the losing decision. His record for 2022 is now 0–1, with an inflated ERA of 18.00. Right-hander Luis Garcia got the win for the Astros. His record is now 4–5, with an ERA of 3.41. There was no save recorded. It was tough for everyone involved to see the Rangers drop this game, and the series.
History on the Mound
An amazing thing happened during Wednesday’s contest. Luis Garcia and reliever Phil Maton both pitched immaculate innings for the Astros in this game. An immaculate inning is when a pitcher strikes out the side on nine straight pitches. Garcia did it in the second inning, and Maton did in the seventh inning. That’s the first time in MLB history that there have been two immaculate innings in one game.
