Over the past several months, the Texas Rangers have made plenty of splashes. They have signed Marcus Semien, Corey Seager, Jon Gray and Mitch Garver, among others. Even with all these major league deals, one must reiterate that the Rangers haven’t forgotten about their minor league system. Their latest move came on Wednesday when they re-signed infielder Charlie Culberson to a minor league deal. Fans have really warmed up to Culberson over the years. He has fit in quite nicely into the Rangers’ lineup in both starting and utility roles.
Extended Stay
It is unclear where Culberson would have ended up had the Texas Rangers not re-signed him. He signed a minor league contract with them last year as well. He eventually had his contract selected, and was brought up to the big club, where he played 91 games for the Rangers. in that stretch in 2021, earning a wRC+ of 85 in his 271 plate appearances. Finding a spot for him in this year’s lineup is sure to be a very satisfying challenge for Texas Rangers manager Chris Woodward. One can’t help but wonder how he is going to do it exactly.
Other Stops Along the Way
The Texas Rangers are not Culberson’s first taste of the big leagues. He has also spent time with the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado Rockies, and the Atlanta Braves. Over his five-year career, he has played every position on the field except for center field. He even recorded two innings on the pitcher’s mound for the Rangers last year. In 2021, he struggled a little at the plate. He hit .243/.296/.381 in his 271 at-bats. Rightnow, he’s in a situation where he’ll be used primarily for his glove. Any sort of productivity he has at the dish will be a bonus for the Texas Rangers in 2022.

The Rangers also announced on Wednesday that they have reached a deal with reliever Greg Holland. The news comes courtesy of Jon Heyman of MLB Network. The Rangers are making a lot of moves, and there is no telling what they’ll do next.
