Texas Rangers Drop Middle Game to Angels

Angels 7, Rangers 2

ARLINGTON, Texas, September 29 — It may be cliche, but it’s true what they say. Nothing lasts forever. This includes the good vibes that the Texas Rangers felt after their 5–2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night. On Wednesday, the Rangers were to drop the middle game to the Angels by a final score of 7–2. This was not just another loss for the Texas Rangers. It also marked their 100th loss. For the third time since moving to Texas, and for the first time since 1973, the Rangers have lost 100 games in a season.

Shohei Is Back

In Tuesday’s game, Shohei Ohtani went 0-for-4 with a walk to his credit. On Wednesday, his bat perked up a little. He went 2-for-5 with a run scored. That run came in the top of the sixth inning on a single by Jack Mayfield. Ohtani also had a stolen base in the game as well. With that steal, he became just the second player in American League history with 45 home runs and 25 stolen bases in a single season. Jose Canseco is the other. He did it in 1998 with the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Angels’ Offense

The aforementioned run in the sixth was not the only one that Mayfield drove in. He also hit a sac-fly to center field in the top of the first. That scored Phil Gosselin. Then in the top of the second inning, Juan Lagares brought home Taylor Ward with a double to center. Jared Walsh made it 4–2 in the top of the sixth inning with a single that allowed Mayfield to score from second. Moments later, Lagares singled home Kurt Suzuki to give the Angels a 5–2 lead. This sixth inning proved to be the most productive for Los Angeles. To cap off the frame, Luis Rengifo drove in Walsh by grounding into a force out. They scored their final run in the top of the ninth. It came on another sac-fly. This one was hit by Brandon Marsh, and it scored Rengifo.

A Pair for Texas

Andy Ibanez scored the first run for the Texas Rangers in the bottom of the fourth inning. Leody Taveras was the one who singled him in. Later on, Brock Holt drove in Jose Trevino with yet another single. Like so many other nights, however, this was not the Rangers’ night. Hopefully things will go better in the series finale between these two clubs on Thursday afternoon at 1:05 PM CDT.

Pitching Notes

Texas Rangers lefty Taylor Hearn got the loss in this one. That brings his record to 6–6 for the year. He threw 5 1/3 innings, giving up four earned runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out two. Angels reliever Jose Quijada got the win. He is now 1–2.
