ARLINGTON, Texas, August 15 – On Sunday afternoon, the Texas Rangers sent their fans home happy. In front of a crowd of nearly 25,000 at Globe Life Field, they beat their division rival Oakland Athletics. The final score was 7-4. With this win, the Rangers took two out of three from Oakland over this particularly hot weekend in Arlington. With their record currently sitting at 42-76, the Rangers will take any sort of consolation prize at this point. Hopefully, this win will provide some momentum in their series against the Seattle Mariners next week. Here is a recap of Sunday’s matinee.
Early Scoring
The Rangers got things started right away in the top of the first inning. Yonny Hernandez scored on an Isiah Kiner-Falefa double to centerfield. This put them ahead 1-0. Two batters later, DJ Peters drove in Kiner-Falefa with his second home run of the season. That made it 3-0. Fans were getting excited at this point. In the top of the second, Athletics’ third baseman Matt Chapman homered off Rangers’ starter Kolby Allard, making it 3-1. However, the Rangers answered right back in the bottom of the second. Charlie Culberson crossed home on a double by Hernandez.
Homer Happy
The Rangers scored their next two runs in the bottom of the third inning. This happened when Adolis Garcia hit his 26th home run of the year. The score would stay 6-1 until the bottom of the fifth. DJ Peters homered again to give the Rangers a six-run lead. Then in the top of the sixth, Oakland responded in kind. Mark Canha hit his twelfth round-tripper of the year, cutting the lead to five runs. The Athletics’ next run came on a Tony Kemp single in the top of the seventh. That brought in Chapman. Then in the top of the eighth, Sean Murphy doubled, bringing in Matt Olson.
Quality Start Streak
Rangers lefty Kolby Allard pitched well on Sunday. He gave up three earned runs on seven hits. Two of those hits were home runs. He struck out two and didn’t allow any walks. In fact, Sunday marked Allard’s third consecutive quality start in which he hasn’t allowed a walk. That doesn’t happen often. He got the win, bringing his record to 3-10. Joe Barlow got the save, his second on the year. Sean Manaea took the loss for Oakland. His record is now 8-6.
