Athletics 8, Rangers 3
ARLINGTON, Texas, August 14 – On a night that saw 13,904 in attendance at Globe Life Field, the Texas Rangers were making history. The large crowd was there to witness something great. Retired third baseman Adrian Beltre and longtime Rangers’ PA Announcer Chuck Morgan were inducted into the team’s hall of fame. On the field, however, it wasn’t so special. The Rangers lost the second game of three against the Oakland Athletics. The final score was 8-3.
Sluggish Offense
The first of the Rangers’ three runs came in the bottom of the first inning. Nathaniel Lowe doubled to left field that allowed Yonny Hernandez to score. Incidentally, these two would be responsible for the Rangers’ next run. It came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Lowe singled off of A’s starter James Kaprielian. Once again, this brought in Hernandez. After an A’s pitching change, the Rangers’ third and final run also came in the sixth. Jonah Heim hit a sac-fly off lefty Andrew Chafin. That scored Adolis Garcia. The Rangers were definitely hoping for more, but it never came.
Slugging A’s
The A’s got their night started right away. In the top of the first inning, Jed Lowrie hit a sharp single to right that scored Starling Marte. Then in the second inning, Matt Chapman hit a solo home run to left field. Fast forward to the sixth inning. Matt Olson made it 3-1 with his 30th homer of the season. Then in the top of the seventh, Mitch Moreland joined in with a solo shot of his own. That made it 4-3. With the game still in the seventh, Chapman hit his second solo homer to stretch the A’s lead to 5-3. Then Marte brought in Seth Brown on a double to left field. Then it was Olson’s turn again. He promptly singled in Marte. This made it 7-3. The A’s final run came on their fifth home run of the night. It came courtesy of Seth Brown to complete the win for the A’s
Pitching Specifics
Jordan Lyles got the ball for the Rangers on Saturday evening. He pitched six innings and gave up five earned runs on eight hits. He struck out five and gave up four of the A’s five home runs. Lyles would end up with the loss, bringing his record to 5-10 on the year. James Kaprielian pitched 5 1/3 innings. He gave up three earned runs on eight hits. Andrew Chafin came in after him and got the win, bringing his record for the season to 1-2.
