Sports. Honestly. Since 2011

Texas Rangers Held Hitless By Corey Kluber

The game of baseball is simply unbelievable. Day in and day out, you really never know what you might see. 2021 has been the year of the no-hitter thus far. The latest occurred on Wednesday evening, as fans were dumbstruck at Globe Life Field while they watched their Texas Rangers held hitless by right-hander Corey Kluber of the New York Yankees. As a result, the final score was 2-0. Only one walk stood between Kluber and perfection. He struck out nine in his magnificent effort. He threw 101 pitches in the game, 71 of which were strikes. It was the first time that the former Ranger had been back to his old ballpark. Needless to say, he wasted no time in leaving an impression.

Deja Vu All Over Again

The events of Wednesday night certainly had a familiar feeling that came along with them. As the late Hall of Fame Yankees catcher, Yogi Berra would say, it was like “deja vu all over again.” Not only was this the sixth no-no thrown in Major League Baseball this year, but it was also the second one thrown in a 24-hour period of time. On Tuesday night, Detroit Tigers right-hander Spencer Turnbull tossed a no-no against the Seattle Mariners. The final score on this night was 5-0.  Meanwhile in Texas, it was the second occasion that saw the Rangers go hitless in 2021. The first came on April 9th when San Diego Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove held the Rangers hitless to go on to a 3-0 victory on the road.

It’s Been Awhile

Yankees fans might want to commit this night to memory. Kluber’s no-hitter was the first one thrown by a Yankees pitcher in the 21st century. The last Yankee to do it was righty, David Cone, on July 18, 1999, against the Montreal Expos, now the Washington Nationals. Cone’s effort that day was of the perfect game variety. His Yankee teammates provided him with six runs of support that day to help seal the deal. All in all, May 19, 2021 will always be a special day for the Yankees and their fans–when they watched as Corey Kluber held the Rangers hitless.
