Miami Marlins Hire Kim Ng as New GM

Meet Kim Ng: The Miami Marlins New GM

The Miami Marlins made significant history on Friday. The team announced that they hired Kim Ng to be their new General Manager. First with the news was Jon Heyman on Twitter.

Of course, this makes Ng the first female to ever be a General Manager of a major league team. In addition, she has already worked with Derek Jeter who is Miami’s CEO in the past with the New York Yankees. Additionally, Ng has a relationship with Gary Denbo, Marlins Director of Player Development and Scouting, from the Yankees as well.

Beyond that, Kim Ng has built up an extensive resume in the game and has long been viewed as a legitimate General Manager candidate. Overall, she has more than 30 years of experience in baseball with 21 years of working in various front office roles. That experience came with the Chicago White Sox from 1990-1996, the aformentioned New York Yankees from 1998-2001, and most recently the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ng was first hired by the Dodgers in 2002 and worked with that organization through 2011.

Furthermore, she has played a role in helping build a postseason contending team in the past as well. The teams that Ng has been part of consist of six League Championship Series teams.  With three of those teams making it to the World Series. With the Marlins goal of building a contending team that can compete over a long period of time, Ng certainly knows how to do that.

Looking Ahead for the Miami Marlins

Now that the Marlins have officially hired Ng, they can set their sights on the 2021 regular season. While there is uncertainty regarding how many games might be played, player development planning never stops. Ng will be involved in those discussions this entire offseason.

The Marlins were a surprise team in 2020 and finished the year with a 31-29 record over the 60-game sample. That was good enough for a postseason berth and second place in the National League East. This offseason, the team will likely look to compliment it’s pitching staff and potentially add another bat somewhere around the diamond.

Regardless, this is a significant day for the Miami Marlins and Kim Ng. One that will forever be in the history books.
