One of the many great things about baseball is that anything can happen. If you’re a member of a Major League coaching staff, this can also prove to be a little unnerving at times. With 11 games left on their schedule, the Texas Rangers are using their players in any way that they possibly can. They have a record of 18-31, and they sit 12.5 games back in the American League West. Here’s a look at some of the headlines coming out of Arlington, TX.
The Many Gloves of Nick Solak
Having a player on your roster that can effectively play multiple positions is a very valuable commodity. The Rangers have one of these types of players in the form of Nick Solak. The 25-year old Solak has been impressive. He has played mostly at second base and in left field in 2020. Most recently, he started in left on Wednesday night. He also has the capability to play at the corners of the infield as well as center field. He has even shown some pop with his bat. This year, he is hitting .263 with two home runs, 20 RBI, and 22 runs scored. He doesn’t seem to be off-balance due to the shortened season, and he is making the best of every opportunity.
From the Bullpen to the Rotation
Fans can be misled by pitching at times. A lot of people seem to think that there is no difference between pitching in the starting rotation and pitching out of the bullpen. Most guys can only be effective in doing one or the other, but being able to do both effectively is a different level of versatility. Utilizing this method, the Rangers have opted to move left-hander Wes Benjamin from the bullpen to the rotation. He’ll be expected to take the hill on Friday evening against the Los Angeles Angels. As a counter move, fellow lefty Kolby Allard is heading to the bullpen. Allard proved unsuccessful in the starting five. He put up a record of 0-6, with an ERA of 8.80 in eight starts.
Utility Help
The Rangers have made a late signing, adding the bat of veteran utility man Andrew Romine. Romine has been sent to the alternate site. He’ll provide help while shortstop Elvis Andrus is out.
Hopefully, these moves prove productive for the remainder of the season.
