Deivi Garcia to Make Major League Debut vs. Mets

Deivi Garcia

After defeating the New York Mets in Saturday’s installment of the Subway Series, the New York Yankees announced Deivi Garcia will make his MLB debut Sunday. Garcia will be the youngest Yankees pitcher to make his MLB debut since Phil Hughes in 2007. He is the organization’s third-best prospect, according to MLB.com.

Garcia To Makes His Debut

On Saturday, manager Aaron Boone announced that Garcia will make his debut on Sunday against the Mets. Boone has not said if he will start in game one or game two. Regardless which game he pitches, Garcia will be tasked with helping a struggling Yankees team.

The team has had an up and down season to this point. They began with an 8-1 record, but everything has gone downhill since then. The injuries have continued to build up and they are coming off their first victory since August 17th.

About Deivi Garcia

On July 2nd, 2015 the New York Yankees signed Deivi Garcia to a minor league contract. On June 3rd, 2016 Garcia began his professional baseball career in the Dominican Summer League. Deivi Garcia climbed through the minors emerging as a top pitcher in the Yankees system.

After the 2017 season Garcia jumped from from rookie-ball straight to A-ball to play on a full-season squad. In 2018, Garcia continued to rise through the ranks starting in Single-A jumping to play with the Yankees Double-A affiliate the Trenton Thunder. He would only make one start with the Thunder, and he would pitch really well. In five innings of work he had seven strikeouts while only giving up two walks.

In 2019, Deivi Garcia began his season with the Tampa Tarpons and he continued to climb through the system. By the end of the 2019 season Garcia was pitching in Triple-A with the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Railriders. Garcia pitched well with the Tarpons and the Thunder but he struggled with the Railriders. In Triple-A he pitched 11 times with six of those appearances being starts. He pitched 40.0 innings, giving up 39 hits and 25 runs. He had an ERA of 5.40 and the end of the season with Scranton/Wilkes Barre.

A Challenge for Garcia

While Deivi Garcia did not pitch great in Triple-A, he will be tasked with trying to get the Yankees back on track. With the team struggling, they are going to need a big performance from the highly rated prospect. If he can pitch well against the Mets, it can open the door for many options in the Yankees rotation for the final month of the 2020 season.
