Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich has been placed on the 60-day injured list with a fractured right knee cap. As a result, the reigning NL MVP will miss the rest of the 2019 season. Yelich suffered the injury in the first inning of a 4-3 win over the Miami Marlins. The team does not know if he will need surgery.

Christian Yelich out for the Season with Fractured Kneecap
The End of a Historic Season
After winning the NL MVP in 2018, Yelich didn’t miss a beat in 2019. On the season, Yelich’s numbers are eye-popping. In 130 games, Yelich batted to a .329 average, slugged 44 home runs, drove in 97 runs, and stole 30 bases. Also, Yelich posted a .429 OBP, .671 SLG, and a whopping 1.100 OPS.
Had he not gotten injured, Yelich was on pace to become the first player in MLB history to compile a 50/30 season (50 homers, 30 stolen bases). Assuming he accomplished this feat, it would’ve made him the NL MVP favorite yet again. However, after the injury, the award looks like a lock for other NL MVP candidate, Cody Bellinger.
Where Do the Brewers Go from Here?
After losing Yelich, the Brewers postseason hopes are in danger. They currently sit five games out of first in the NL Central and one game out of the second NL Wild Card spot. Without their superstar right fielder, the Brewers will look for even more offensive production from players like Ryan Braun, Mike Moustakas, Lorenzo Cain, and Yasmani Grandal.
“We have to move forward,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “We feel awful for Christian. That’s the thing kinda resonating with me right now is he’s a special player, and it’s a joy to watch him play every day. And he’s the best at what he does. So not being able to see that every day is definitely no good. But we gotta respond, and we have a great opportunity, and the guys battled to a great win tonight.”
