New York Mets deal Jason Vargas to the Philadelphia Phillies

The New York Mets are making some big moves involving their pitching. Recent reports from The Good Phight say that the Philadelphia Phillies just gained Jason Vargas in exchange for catcher Austin Bossart.

Vargas has been a huge improvement from his horrific 2018. He gained unwanted attention from his former manager Mickey Callaway earlier this season when he had words with a Mets reporter in a clubhouse dispute. That is now water under the bridge. This season, he improved from an ERA near 6.00 to 4.01. That alone speaks of his pitching abilities. It can be hard for a struggling pitcher to revamp his repertoire. Steven Matz still has yet to do that despite a recent gem. Vargas, however, is more than capable of pitching with dominance. Vargas is also the proud owner of a 6-5 record so far. The Mets may not just be done trading away their arms, but Vargas is now joining a Philadelphia staff that has tormented their division rivals.

Outlook for Vargas

The left-handed Vargas was on a slightly outdated New York pitching staff that has fallen off since 2015. His teammate Noah Syndergaard is rumored to be trade bait as well. Vargas has turned his own season around for the better amongst teammates who have some good stuff of their own.

While the Phillies hold the advantage over the Mets in the National League East, the expectations to continue pitching well are higher for him.

Former ace Noah Syndergaard once had mindblowing stuff. Jacob DeGrom won the Cy Young Award most deservingly last season. Vargas was, at one point this year, pitching his way into discussions that were praising his transformation. However, he started to slide recently. The Phillies hope that a change of scenery will help him regain form and give them a much-needed boost in the Wild Card hunt.
