Report: Astros, Bregman Agree on Contract Extension

Late Tuesday night, the Houston Astros and star third baseman Alex Bregman agreed to a five-year, $100 million contract extension. This was first reported by FOX 26 Sports Director Mark Berman. This announcement comes on the same day Bregman announced he is signing an endorsement deal with Adidas.

In his previous contract, the Astros have team control until 2022. Bregman was set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2023. This contract extension keeps Bregman in Houston until 2024 as it will not start until next season. The 2018 MLB All-Star MVP will now be guaranteed a roster spot until his age 30 season.

2018 Play Deserving of Contract

Last season, the star third baseman hit for a .286 batting average. In his 170 hits, 31 went deep, which was good for sixth in the majors for third baseman in 2018. With an OPS of .926, Bregman was a force to reckon with at the plate. A season high 96 walks with a league-high 51 doubles helped elevate his presence at the plate in 2018. Bregman also had a unique season with two walk-off hits that traveled no more than 15 feet from home plate.

This move helps keep a piece of the core that has helped bring the Astros recent success, such as the 2017 World Series. He emerged during the 2018 season as one of the best corner infielders in the game. Not only was his offense a step up from 2017, but his defense improved as well with 245 assists from the corner position of third base. While at third base, Bregman also contributed to 23 double plays that were turned by the Astros in 2018.

Off-the-Field Projects

It will also now give Bregman an opportunity to start his podcast, Third Base with Benny & Bregs, that he announced on social media just a few days ago.

His teammate RHP Collin McHugh started his podcast, The Twelve Six Podcast with Collin McHugh, started his podcast back on December 29 of last year with guest and teammate RHP Lance McCullers Jr.

Despite all of the numerous reports from Berman and MLB.com, the Astros have not yet confirmed the deal with the young super star.
